6 Known issue with .VCF -imported contacts

1 Importing from SIM card

  1. Insert the SIM card.
  2. Turn phone on and enter the PIN code if requested.
  3. Go Settings > Applications > People: tap on “SIM card” under Import contacts.
  4. Transfer starts and completes in a few seconds.
  5. Confirmation of successfully importing the contacts from the file appears.
  6. Tap on “View all contacts” to launch People application and to view your contacts.

Note: These contacts are called local contacts as they will not be synchronised to any servers. They can be edited on the phone but they remain local.

2 Importing from micro-SD card

  1. Transfer the .vcf file onto your SD card.
  2. Make sure the SD card is inside your Jolla and turn the phone on.
  3. Go to Settings > Applications > People: tap on “From contact file” under Import contacts.
  4. Tap on the vcf file in question. Transfer starts and completes in a few seconds.
  5. Confirmation of successfully importing the contacts from the file appears.
  6. Tap on “View all contacts” to launch People application and to view your contacts.
  7. You can now delete the contact file in “Home”.

Note: These contacts are called local contacts as they will not be synchronised to any servers. They can be edited on the phone but they remain local.

Note: If you have plenty of contact files in the SD card then it is best to concatenate them to one vCard file before transferring them to the phone. See chapter “Over USB below” for advice.

3 Synchronizing from web services (Google, Facebook etc.)

Jolla supports many common services from which you can synchronise your contacts into your device, such as Google, Facebook etc.

Add the service you use by selecting Settings > Accounts. Then pull down the view and select "Add account" from the Pulley menu & sign-in!

Below are detailed descriptions of setting up accounts in case you feel like you need a little extra help:

3.1 Synchronizing from Google

  1. Make sure you have a working Internet connection.
  2. Add your Google account to Jolla in: Settings > Account > Select "Add account" from pulley menu above.
  3. Tap on Google and proceed as requested.
  4. In the final view, you will be asked to choose the services you want, including details related to the synchronisation frequency.
  5. Save changes by flicking left or by pressing "Accept"

Contacts and other selected items will be copied from Google to the phone immediately, provided that the Internet connection works.

3.2 Synchronizing from Mail for Exchange service (viewable with Outlook)

  1. Make sure you have a working Internet connection.
  2. To add your Microsoft Exchange account to Jolla go to: Settings > Accounts.
  3. Tap on Microsoft Exchange, and proceed as requested.
  4. Choose the items you want synchronised to your Jolla, including ‘People’ and ‘Synchronise automatically’.
  5. Save changes by flicking left or by pressing "Accept"
  6. Contacts will be copied from Exchange to the phone starting immediately, provided that the Internet connection works.
  7. Next time contacts are synchronised to the phone happens according to the email synchronization schedule (see the settings of Exchange account).
  8. To force a sync, go to Settings > Accounts > your Exchange account, and select "Sync" from the pulley menu above.

4 Send contact file over email

  1. On the device where you have your contacts now as vCard (.vcf) file, write an email message and attach your contacts as one vCard file to the message.
See chapter “Over USB” below for advice how to concatenate your contacts.
  2. Send the message to your email account.
  3. On Jolla phone, receive and open the mail message using your email account.
  4. Observe the attached vCard (.vcf) file in the message. Tap on it. Your phone will import the contacts now.
  5. Confirmation of successfully importing the contacts from the file appears.
  6. Tap on “View all contacts” to launch People application and to view your contacts.

Note: These contacts are called local contacts as they will not be synchronised to any servers. They can be edited on the phone but they remain local.

5 Importing from another phone

5.1 Over USB

  1. Using the utilities in the other phone (which may vary or be missing), export your contacts to a memory card (or to phone memory). Usually this utility can be found in the Phonebook.
  2. Depending on the phone, they are exported as individual vcard (.vcf) files to a directory, one contact in one file (for instance in case of Nokia N9), or they are exported to one big vcard (.vcf) file containing all contacts (for instance in case of Samsung Galaxy phones).
  3. Connect the other phone to a PC with a USB cable.
  4. Locate this directory or file in the memory card of the other phone (or in phone memory).
  5. Copy the directory/file to PC – let’s assume they go to directory called MyContacts or to file called ALL.vcf. On Windows PC it would be best to create MyContacts in the root ( C:\ ).
  6. Disconnect the phone from PC.
  7. If the contacts are in one file, go to step 8. If they are in a directory, do the next step , i.e., concatenate the contacts to one vCard file as follows:
    A) on Linux PC by using the Terminal application
    - go to directory MyContacts
    - cat *.vcf > ALL.vcf       (see chapter ISSUES)

    B) on Windows PC  (do this in the Windows command window which you can launch from the “Search programs and files” box by typing command cmd)
    - go to directory MyContacts   ( e.g. cd C:/MyContacts )
    - copy *.vcf ALL.vcf

At this point you have all of your contacts packed into one file, ALL.vcf.

  1. Connect Jolla phone to the PC with a USB cable – select “PC connection” in the USB dialog. Wait for some seconds to let the PC to install the drivers. It may be necessary to reconnect the USB cable and select “PC connection” again. Now your phone should appear as Sailfish drive on the PC. Look for Phone Memory under Sailfish.
  2. Using the File manager on the PC, copy the file ALL.vcf to Phone Memory. Don't place the file in a folder!
  3. Disconnect the phone from PC once PC has completed copying the file.
  4. Go Settings > Applications > People:  tap on “From contact file” under Import contacts. (*)
  5. Tap on the vcf file in question. Phone imports the transferred file to phonebook People.
  6. Confirmation of successfully importing the contacts from the file appears.
  7. Tap on “View all contacts” to launch People application and to view your contacts.

Note: These contacts are called local contacts as they will not be synchronised to any servers. They can be edited on the phone but they remain local.

5.2 Over Bluetooth with SyncML

  1. Visit menu Settings > System > Bluetooth sync
  2. Pull down 'Add new device'. It should be Nokia N9, N900, N950 or a Nokia Symbian phone. Tap on 'Accept'.
  3. Do Bluetooth pairing between the other phone and Jolla phone.
  4. Reception of contacts starts automatically.

5.3 Over Bluetooth without using Jolla’s Bluetooth sync feature (doesn’t require SyncML)

    1. Do Bluetooth pairing between the other phone and Jolla phone.
    2. Open the phonebook of the other phone.
    3. Select all contacts and ask to transfer them over Bluetooth to Jolla phone – this will work only if the other phone is able to concatenate all contacts to one vCard file (not all phones can do it) – let’s assume the file name is Contacts.vcf.
Note: This same method works for individual contacts, too, but is time consuming if there are many of them.
    4. Jolla phone may present a request to accept a file import. Accept it. If the display is lit you should see a brief notification at the top of the display when the transfer is complete. For a big file a circular progress indicator appears.
    5. Go Settings > System > Transfers. File Contacts.vcf appears on the top of the list.
    6. Tap on this top item. Your phone will import the contacts now.
    7. Confirmation of successfully importing the contacts from the file appears.
    8. Tap on “View all contacts” to launch People application and to view your contacts.
    9. You can now delete file Contacts.vcf in Settings > System > Transfers.

6 Known issue with .VCF -imported contacts

Sometimes the catenation of vcf files may produce a file where the line feed characters are missing. Hence the file has lines like "END:VCARDBEGIN:VCARD". Jolla will not be able to import a file like this which does not have the correct syntax. This may be because of some syntax problems in the original vcf files that are to be catenated.

In such a case one way to avoid the problem would be to do the catenation with Windows.
