How Do I Move Contacts From a Symbian S3 device?

Jolla -

This article will list methods for transferring contacts from Symbian S^3 devices such as the N8-00, E7-00 and C7-00 to your Jolla.

Transferring contacts using Bluetooth:

Method #1:

With this method, you will attempt to transfer all the contacts in your S3 device using Jolla's "Bluetooth sync" feature, that was introduced in SailfishOS 1.0.4.20. This does not work with all phones. Should it work with your S3 device, then this would be an easy way to transfer the contacts to Jolla.

1. Switch Bluetooth on in your Symbian device, and make sure that it is discoverable.
2. Open Jolla's "Bluetooth sync" application in Settings > System > Bluetooth sync.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Method #2:

The transfer of contacts using this method might be more cumbersome than method #1, because it involves the accepting contact transfers one by one before they show up in your People -app:

  • Pair both devices using Bluetooth
  • In your Symbian device, select Mark multiple items in Options menu in Contacts.
  • Mark items either individually or select 'Mark all' in the 'Options' menu.
  • Select 'Send as contact card' in 'Options' menu.
  • Select 'via Bluetooth' in the selection dialog.
  • Select your Jolla device. If it is not visible, search for more devices.
  • On you Jolla, accept the transfers individually.
  • After transfer is complete the files will be visible on your event Screen
  • Tap on the notification and the contacts open in your People app

Transferring contacts with a PC and Nokia PC Suite

If you have Nokia PC Suite program in your Windows PC (Nokia Suite for Mac might not support latest OS X versions) then you can transfer your contacts to the memory of the PC. This way all details of contacts are preserved.

On PC, it is best to save the contacts as vCard (.vcf) files to folder C:\MyContacts. After this, launch the Windows terminal application (type cmd in the search field of Start menu - a black terminal window will appear).

Type the following commands in the terminal:

cd C:\MyContacts

copy *.vcf ALL.vcf

Connect your Jolla phone to the PC using a USB cable - take "PC connection" mode. The phone appears as Sailfish device to the PC. Sailfish device contains the main folders Phone Memory and SD Card (if installed). Copy file ALL.vcf to Phone Memory.

Detach Jolla from PC. Visit Jolla menu Settings > Apps > People and touch item "From contact file". Now touch item "ALL.vcf". Jolla will move the contacts to People application now.

Saving contacts onto a SD card with your S^3 device, and fetching them from there with Jolla

If your S^3 device has a micro SD card then you save the contacts to the card (formatted to FAT32). All details are preserved.

We will follow an instructions from this web page: http://www.justin.my/2011/04/how-to-transfer-contact-from-nokia-to-android/

On your S^3 device:

-- Press ‘Contact’, Options -> Mark/Unmark -> Mark All
-- Options -> Copy -> To Memory Card
-- It may display ‘Remove existing contacts from memory card?’, press ‘Yes’
-- All your contacts will save in your SD card, by (contact-name.vcf) files.

Move the SD card from your S^3 device to Jolla now. Because we want to wrap up the contacts first we move them first to PC. Create folder C:\MyContacts to the PC first.

Connect your Jolla phone to the PC using a USB cable - choose "PC connection" mode on your Jolla. The phone appears as Sailfish device to the PC. Sailfish device contains the main folders Phone Memory and SD Card. Click on SD Card and find your S^3 device contacts there. Copy them to C:\MyContacts

Launch the Windows terminal application (type cmd in the search field of Start menu - a black terminal window will appear). Type the following commands in the terminal:

cd C:\MyContacts

copy *.vcf ALL.vcf

Copy file ALL.vcf to Phone Memory of the Sailfish device. Detach Jolla from PC. Visit Jolla menu Settings > Apps > People and touch item "From contact file". Now touch item "ALL.vcf". Jolla will move the contacts to People application now.
